This week in film (a not so typical review)

Two films worth a mention this week. DEEP WATER with Ben Affleck screening now on Prime and BAD VEGAN, a Netflix documentary series.

To follow is not a review per se, you can look up in depth reviews of these films/series. This post is just my reflection, from a writers perspective, and like anything it is just an opinion. We all like different things and for different reasons.

Let’s begin with the documentary series, BAD VEGAN.

For anyone who has seen the Netflix doco ‘The Tinder Swindler’, will relate to this, but for me personally, BAD VEGAN hits harder. It left me asking the question, why would you allow someone to manipulate you in such a way that you become a fugitive, lose all credibility and not to mention all your money and then some?

My conclusion: We will do anything for LOVE. It’s a very scary thought and even as an outsider, we can say ‘Nah, no fucking way would we do that.’ but the reality is, sometimes when we get drawn into that web of deceit, so much so, we end up in so deep we feel there is literally no way out. And after all we love them, and they love us, right?

So, yeah, that was my take-away. Sad, poignant, and heart breaking to learn that LOVE can be so beautiful and wonderful, but can also lead us down a very dangerous path.

This is the official synopsis:

From Chris Smith, the executive producer of Tiger King and director of Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened, comes BAD VEGAN: FAME. FRAUD. FUGITIVES., a wild four-part documentary series that explores how Sarma Melngailis, the celebrity restaurateur behind the glittering New York hotspot Pure Food and Wine, went from being the queen of vegan cuisine to being known as the “Vegan Fugitive.” Shortly after meeting a man named Shane Fox on Twitter in 2011, Melngailis begins draining her restaurant’s funds and funneling the money to Fox after he cons her into believing he could make her dreams — from expanding her food empire to making her beloved pitbull immortal — a reality…but only if she continues to obey his every request without question. A few years later the couple, now married and on the run after stealing nearly $2 million from the restaurant and its staff, are found holed up in a Tennessee motel by law enforcement. Their undoing? A charge made under Fox’s real name, Anthony Strangis, for a Domino’s pizza. BAD VEGAN: FAME. FRAUD. FUGITIVES. takes viewers on a journey more bizarre than fiction.

DEEP WATER, a sexy and psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, directed by Adrian Lyne, Oscar nominated for Flashdance, 91/2 weeks, Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal and Unfaithful.

Not since ‘Unfaithful’ have I felt so mesmerised by an erotic, and spellbinding thriller. Ben Affleck is his usual convincing self, that seemlessly pulls off that non-chalant type of character that you see in ‘Gone Girl’ or ‘The Town’.

Do you like him? Do you not like him? Can he be trusted? Why is he so calm and collected amidst what he is experiencing in his not so ordinary marriage?

All the wonderful questions you want to ask as the director and cast take you on a journey into a non-typical marriage and the Love story that is not all it seems.

From a writers perspective, the characterisation is in top form. As for plot, well there are some holes, but forgivable ones as the characters in this piece are so strong, it doesn’t matter.

By the time we get to the end, we are left wanting more. The true feeling of erotism, the wanting, the desire and the quietly unspoken love affair that runs deeper than you can ever imagine.

It’s evocative, erotic, and full of intrigue, with enough action to keep you wondering where is this going and what will happen next. I found the end very satisfying in a haunting, scary kind of way. The way that tells me that LOVE can be such a wonderful, yet dangerous thing.

It’s interesting that the two films I haven chosen both have that underlying theme of LOVE, deceit, desire and at what lengths or how far will we go for it?

It’s a great question? And will we ever truly know the answer because LOVE is a different experience for each and everyone of us

What do you think? Have you seen either of these films? Let me know in the comments below ⤵️

The video that changed my life

‘It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.’

Joaquin Phoenix
My balcony. Eastern Suburbs, Sydney 2016

It’s the 19th March, Sydney 2016. I’m sitting in my bedsit, overlooking the balcony that captures the ocean breeze. A dear friend sends me the link to a youtube video by Gary Yourofsky giving a speech on Veganism.

In this moment I’ve been vegetarian for 30+ years, and veganism is something I have considered almost every day for the past 10 years leading to this point, but for one reason or another, I felt it was too radical and extreme.

Fast forward 1 hour of my time watching this video on my laptop and I am in tears. Tears of grief, (not shock) as I’ve known about animal suffering for as young as I can remember, which led me to being the co-founder of an animal rights group in 1983, vegetarianism and choosing cruelty-free products.

It was tears of liberation, as I felt in the core of my being that me toying with the idea of Veganism over the past 10 years was just dumb. And finally, I had set myself free, not to mention the animals. Why did I wait so long?

‘Could you look an animal in the eyes and say to it, ‘My appetite is more important than your suffering.’

Moby

So, back to the video that changed my life. It woke me up to my own ignorance. I knew all this stuff, well perhaps not all of it. I hadn’t realised just how cruel the dairy industry is. I honestly thought and believed buying free range eggs, and non-animal rennet in cheese was saving the animals.

I was wrong.

I think killing a cow for steak is kinder than how they suffer for milk. I think killing a chicken is kinder than what the hens endure for eggs.

I am certainly not advocating meat eating, but where the dairy industry is involved, I do think it needs to be put into perspective. Once you understand how cruel the dairy industry is, I cannot imagine why you would continue to support it.

In that moment and it only took a moment, I knew my days of vegetarianism were over, and I almost felt ashamed for being a vegetarian for so long. So, I raided my cupboards for all products that had milk or eggs in the ingredients, milk was thrown out, and eggs removed from the fridge. I parcelled it up and gave to people who were not vegan, and could do with some food in their belly.

For a week I suffered chronic headaches/migraines, NOT because I had gone vegan, but because of the inadvertent removal of sugar in crackers, biscuits, soups etc. Do you know how much hidden sugars are in food?

So, yep I had withdrawals from the sugar. And don’t feel that going vegan means you cannot enjoy the treat of sugar, or that sugar is not vegan, it was because the products I gave away had dairy products in them, milk chocolate, biscuits etc and I hadn’t gotten around to finding the vegan alternatives.

So, sugar withdrawal was my only side effect. If you are thinking of going Vegan (which I hope you will consider) you don’t have to go cold turkey like a did. Yes, it was a smooth transistion for me having been a vegetarian for so long, however, that is also they way I do things. I did the exact same thing when I went from eating the flesh of animals to going vegetarian.

Once I make up my mind to do something, that’s it. That’s what I do. If I decide to pack my bags and leave Australia for 6 months and end up being gone for 3 years, then that is what I do. Weaning off anything or planning for too long is not part of my DNA.

I am sharing my experience with you, but we all experience everything differently and what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa.

Caveat or sidenote: It truly erks me that I have to even say this, but it needs to be said. The term ‘Vegan’ or ‘Veganism’ has been hijacked by the multi-corporations who want to bring in 3D meat that bleeds, all in the name of climate change, and/or by certain factions of the spiritual community who say that you can only ascend to a higher consciousness if you are Vegan.

I DO NOT buy into any of the above. I am, and like most Vegans, VEGAN FOR THE ANIMALS. The End.

In conclusion:

My only regrets about going Vegan, is that I did not do it sooner.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN

Speech is silver, Silence is Golden

OR is it?

Where to begin….

First up, just want to say thank you for hanging in there and being a valued subscirber. More and regular posts coming your way, however my aim is to keep them often, to the point, and brief. Is that even possible you ask? I know right? I ask myself that all the time LOL

Secondly, how did you enjoy the trailer of 33.3? If you missed it, you can watch it here. It’s just a short video, it will be the first in the series of radio plays in the Twenty Past Midnight channel. Let me know in the comments below.

Now, to the title of this post. I was going to call it ‘WHY I’VE BEEN SILENT ON THE GRAM’ but changed my mind.

The quote ‘Silence is Golden’ is an interesting quote or should I say ‘Speech is silver, Silence is Golden’ which implies that sometimes when we have nothing to say, it’s best to say nothing at all, or when we need to respond, silence in itself is a response, or when we are SILENT we LISTEN. Can you see both words use the same letters?

And then we have Plato’s quote ‘Your silence gives consent’, so just by not speaking up we are agreeing, complying or consenting to whatever it is we are being faced with.

The English language never ceases to amaze me.

And it was this very Plato quote above that got me shadow banned on Instagram. Yep, over 1K views and then immediately pulled down off my feed without explanation despite my incessant messaging every day to find out why.

Instagram say they do not shadow ban, but anyone who has experienced this bizarre behaviour and plummeting views from there on out, and broken accounts, BTW this is my third account that has been broken, and that’s just on instagram, will actually know it’s a real thing.

But I’m not here to bash Instagram. I don’t really care to be honest. If you want to stay connected with me if and when I get deplatformed, like just about everybody these days, then please join my telegram channel. It’s uncensored and freedom of speech still exists, (for now anyway)

Side note: My channel does not encourage fear porn or hate speech. It is a small but growing community of supportive and like minded people, where we share humour, art, politics, and life. I’d love to see you over there (:

Also, remember to join my mailing list for when these platforms go down, or our pages are removed , that way you will still be able to connect with everything I do and be kept up-to-date with all the latest from the Wyld And Untamed. A pop up to subscribe should appear, be sure to sign up. If it’s not working for any reason, then drop me a line here

And to add insult to injury my internet/wifi was taken down on Thursday 3 July and is still down at writing of this post. I have limited data on my phone so still unable to be active on social media, however, I will continue to post here by way of scheduling posts and trust that the interwebs will send it as per the schedule. Yes, these posts have been written in advance, as soon as I knew I wouldn’t be back up anytime soon.

If you can help me out by sharing my post to your socials until my wifi is back up and running, I would truly appreciate it.

You will notice I have some new additions to the website PODCAST |MUSIC + TALK this is where you will be directed to my website that hosts all my Radio Shows where you can listen on Spotify.

AND…some new drop down menus in the POETRY section with relevant categories to the poetry I post, so it’s easier to find what suits your mood (:

AND… VEGAN SKIN CARE + COSMETICS that I have a long standing and loyal relationship with where you can order directly through me hassle and fuss free. Check out the page to learn more.

but wait…..

There’s more LOL See what happens when I’m not on social media! Shock horror… shizz gets done.

Until next time.

With love from my 💜 to yours
